Away, and out, of the city
I have led us to the very edge of our verdant lands
Where time simply stopped
Nothing would grow, light and shadow would not change
The time of day now stoic in a perpetual noon
So I began to walk, and others began to follow me
Until we found ourselves here, where the path through the forest dissolves into a tangle of overgrown green
Where none of us have ever been before
Do we remain here? I do not want to
Some of our number think that our city was cursed
Others, that we were the cursed ourselves
I do not know if I care which is true
Because I can feel the empty silence in our city
I can feel its inverted breath at my back
If the others cannot detect it, what then?
Am I merely mad?
Or have they heard the blank white nothing themselves?
Decided that this far is enough, that we should walk no further
And welcome whatever arrival awaits us
Coming over us like a wave of quiet
I wonder, will we feel it?
Or hear it approach on deafening wind
When we are laid here asleep in the woods, resigned in exhaustion
And the last moment passes
Would we even know it had happened?
